TRAINING AREA NOTES Polo Flat is a haven for private pilots and small commercial operators, close to Cooma yet not in a position to cause a noise nuisance. We have avgas, hangarage, ample sheltered aircraft
parking and lots of uncontrolled airspace. The training area is to the east and south of the
airfield over level open country and there are a number of country airfields nearby, at the coast
and in the mountains for navigation training or fun. The airfield is especially suitable for
training, surrounded by open country with good weather and no competing commercial aircraft
operations. There are several airfields nearby to practice cross-country skills. The airfield at
Polo Flat was the main centre of aviation for the Snowy Mountains hydro-electric scheme in
the 1950s. We welcome private pilots who want to base their aircraft here, and encourage
groups of pilots to fly in to Polo Flat and spend a weekend of intensive aviation.

ACCOMMODATION and SOCIAL ACTIVITIES Accommodation is on the airfield, 3 bedrooms sleeping up to 7, shower, full kitchen, sitting room, all wheelchair accessible. In March 2001 we established a unique flying centre for people with disabilities at Polo Flat Airfield, so that students and pilots can stay in the clubhouse in our wheelchair adapted facilities. |
DISTRICT ATTRACTIONSCooma is a thriving country town close to the snowfields and the Sapphire Coast and has a number of good restaurants, galleries and specialist shops, an 18 hole golf course, a race course next to the airfield, a triple cinema, trout fishing streams and other outdoor activities, as well as being the headquarters of Snowy Mountains Scheme. Visitors can bushwalk in the mountains in summer or enjoy the ski slopes in winter and glide at Bunyan Soaring Centre just down the road. |
